Halloween fairy houses are the new trend
DIY Halloween fairy gardens are popping up on Pinterest, and they couldn’t be cuter. I love to make tiny miniature gardens. So, why not add a Pumpkin and make a Halloween Fairy house!
So, so how do you start a DIY Halloween fairy garden? Well, I’m going to try to help walk you through this DIY Halloween craft project step by step. BUT, there is a slight catch! I want you to keep in mind there are some areas to this project you are going to have to fill in with your own creativeness. Yeah, yeah… I know you don’t think you are creative blah blah blah… Just trust me you can do this.

Each fairy garden should look different. It’s sort of like a home every home has its own flare. From colors, furniture, and decorative accents each space is going to have its own charm.Same with your tiny miniature pumpkin fairy house.The materials you choose are really going to make your Halloween fairy garden unique.
Here is a list of the materials I used, but you can switch things up as needed
Basic Materials
- Potting Soil
- Large rocks for drainage
- Medium-sized Container – I used a thrift store basket
- Seasonal flower or plant-like a Fall Mum – check out these ideas for fall flowers
- Small to Medium Pumpkin
Creative Materials
- Acrylic paint. I used White, yellow, and black.
- Black sharpie marker
- Fairy garden embellishments. For example miniature chairs, wood pieces, dollar tree ghosts, and knickknacks. Anything you think will liven up your Halloween fairy garden.
- Pebbles or stones – I used the black river stones from Dollar Tree (optional)
- Single “yard Solar light” (optional)
- Tea lights – (optional)
- Sand or small gravel stone
How to plant a Halloween Fairy Garden?
There are three key parts when you go to plant a fairy garden.
Drainage
First, you want to make sure your container garden has good drainage. If using a container such as a decorative basket you will want to make sure the plants will get have good drainage. Especially in the uncertain weather of autumn weeks ahead.
Quality Soil
Make sure you have quality soil for your plants. As with any potted plants and container gardens, you should use good quality potting soil. I like to use miracle grow potting soil.
Seasonally appropriate plants or flowers
Finally, choose your flowers and plants carefully. In the Midwest, mums (Chrysanthemum) are popular fall flowers because they are strong plants with bright flowers. Halloween Fairy Garden Assembly Instructions
- Place the large rocks in the bottom of your container and cover them with soil.
- Plant your flower, place your Pumpkin and solar light.
- Outline the door of your Pumpkin fairy house using a pen or pencil
4. Remove the pumpkin from your garden and start painting! Of course, you could carve your pumpkin and fairy garden door instead. But that will double the project time.
When I asked my niece if we should paint the pumpkin or carve it she said. “Painting would be much easier and quicker!” I said “Right on sweetheart!” So, painting it was!
5. To highlight the details of the door and windows we used a black sharpie.
6. While waiting for the paint on the pumpkin to dry we created the stone pathway. It's fun to imagine the “fairy” trick or treaters walking up to the Pumpkin house door. To make the path lay flat rocks leading to painted pumpkin front door.
7. Add your own creative embellishments like colored stone, Dollar Tree Halloween knickknack, and tea lights! This is how you will make this Halloween fairy garden your own creation! So, have fun with it!
8. Finally, when your pumpkin is dry add it back into the garden!
Voilà! I think any tiny trick-or-treaters would enjoy a visit to this Halloween Fairy House. It looks great in the dark too!
