Even though my family has a knack for cultivating plant life, meaning our outdoor basil plants and fig trees are extremely fruitful and yield impressive results (seriously, we deliver fresh produce to all of our neighbors). But, if we have to tend to indoor plants — fresh roses, pastel daisies and even succulents — it won’t be all too pretty.
Luckily, The Sill kickstarted my second full-time job as a plant mom. Aside from the occasional bouquet that sits in a vase in my bedroom, I’ve never had a consistent seedling multiply into a lavish roompiece.
After hearing the plentiful benefits of The Sill — and fervent recommendations from my best friend who, no joke, has 40 plants in a bookshelf in her bedroom — I decided to take the plunge.

How does The Sill work?
Here’s the rundown. Initially, the company launched in 2012 to help urban millennials reap (and sow) the benefits of caring for plants if they didn’t have access to a greenhouse or other locales selling fresh pots. Great, right?
The Sill even offers The Small Space Bundle ($46) for, well, small apartment-like spaces and The Pet-Friendly Bundle ($54) if you have furry friends or even care for birds.
Now, the greenery-minded company offers a garden of options, including live plants, plant bundles (the ones we tried), a $42 monthly subscription that sends a new plant every 30 days, grow kits and even workshops to water your mind with all things potting, plant care and possible houseplant pests and disease management.
What’s more, with each plant product page, you’ll understand exactly how it should be taken care of. This includes taking note of recommended brightness, sun exposure, water and humidity levels for each one. Why is this important? The Sill makes it super clear which plant option is the most suitable for your home space and lifestyle.
There’s even a Plant Care Library that helps you break down every plant type, from the aglaonema to the ZZ plant. Also, come plants come with pots, which is so convenient.
Our review of The Sill
This isn’t my first rodeo. I once ordered from Urbanstems and ever since, am amazed by how plant delivery services maintain the freshness of leaves and blooms. But, lo and behold, my bundles came neatly and delicately packaged to springboard my plant-caring journey.
One somewhat broken leaf aside, however, the bundles were freshly packed and simple to plant. I took out two large pots from my outdoor shed for the two of my plants and left the two smaller plants in their original pot. The mini plant in The Editor’s Pick Bundle is straight-up chillin’ in my kitchen.
The Sill sells the Organic Potting Mix separately, but I used leftover soil I had from summer gardening. Once I potted, I immediately hydrated all five plants with a bounty of water from my garden hose, just to give them much-needed nutrients. After that, it was all about following the care instructions for each bundle.
At that point, I felt confident to place the plants by my bedroom window seat and living room window table to nurture them.
The Pros
The first pro is unmistakenly the convenience. OMG, it’s as convenient as ever. I live in New Jersey and, especially on autumn weekends when apple and pumpkin picking ensue, it’s like TSA trying to get to a greenhouse without traffic.
It’s true; virtually every minivan from the Northeast trek to Jersey.
Plus, I love the endless resources available on The Sill’s website. Especially as a novice planter, it’s helpful to learn about the needs of different plant types. It makes shopping for future plants (and even signing up for a monthly subscription) excitingly anticipating.
The price of each plant, even the bundles, is worth it. I asked my father how much he thought each plant was and, giving a basic estimate, said between $10 to $15. This is essentially true, depending on what you order. So, another check for The Sill.
The Cons
The only con to speak of is the quality of the included pots. Though I wasn’t expecting much (after all, an original plant pot is your typical greenhouse one), it would have at least been more practical to include a spill tray to place under the pot. For my bundles, I placed a black plastic dish to ensure my wood floors wouldn’t soil.
Something else to note — with bundles, you’re not getting the whole from-the-ground-up experience as you would planting a seedling. But, that’s not The Sill’s fault because they sell grow kits if that method of in-house gardening sounds a bit more official.
The bottom line
Even though I’m still a plant mom in training, I recommend The Sill. The convenience, affordability and pure excitement make the service worth it. The Sill makes for the perfect gift, for anyone, and there’s so much it offers to consumers — whether beginners like me or full-rooted professionals.
With The Sill, my space has never looked lovelier.
