This doesn't count in the lineup of DBZ movies, at least not to me, but it's available to be reviewed and it's short so why not.

Though the animation is superb and beautifully cleaned up, coming from Super's era, all character designs besides Bardock are rancid. The inhabitants of this planet don't look remotely like they belong in the Dragon Ball universe. Chilled is a shorter palette swap of Freiza who honestly looks like a child playing dress up.

Seeing Bardock ascend to a Super Saiyan is wicked, but something that should have honestly been earned from the events in the original movie, from what he goes through there.

It's a neat little "what-if" made into the length of an episode, yet I can't help but feel there was wasted potential here. If there was more polish worked in and they let it be as long as these other movies, we would have gotten something more special.

    Series: Dragon Ball Ranked

So they did this spin-off "What if" scenario 20 years later based on the original Bardock film. To begin to enjoy the film, you have to believe some very strange and absurd things. That's not out of the norm for Dragon Ball from what I have seen so I did.

You see, I really wanted to like this special. The Bardock movie is the best DBZ movie I have seen so far, and the premise of this was definitely dumb, but it also sounded pretty fun. It was not pretty fun.

A lot of set up goes into this special. The main fight doesnt even really start until halfway through, and instead we are itnroduced to…

If you go into this expecting some sweet sweet canon lore you're going to have a bad time. For a 'what if?' scenario this is a lot of fun and does shine a light onto a new era of the DBZ universe. Also getting to see Bardock be a badass for another 20 minutes is a massive bonus.

    Me…

There are pros and cons to this 100% cannon sequel (not prequel, people) to Dragon Ball Z: Bardock the Father of Goku. First, we are meant to suspend our disbelief to maximum proportions, in which Frieza's attack to the Planet Vegeta that causes the genocide of the entire Saiyan race caused ONLY Bardock to go back in time. So a destructive power that erased a planet and every Saiyan living in it. In the series, Frieza also did this in order to prevent the legendary Super Saiyan warrior to be born which, as legend told, would be capable of defeating Frieza even in his perfect form. These intentions are reiterated with slight dialogue modifications in the opening sequence of this…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

So, this is an odd duck.

In 2011 Ōishi Naho wrote and drew a three part Dragon Ball "what if" manga that was then adapted to an anime special as part of Toei's Jump Festa 2012.

The story starts the same place Return of Cooler did; the climax of Bardock, the Father of Goku. Bardock tries to attack Freeza, Freeza blows up the whole damn Planet Vegeta, starting with Bardock.

Then Bardock wakes up in a small village being treated by some strange purple alien people. Quickly he learns he is on Planet Plant, the former name of Planet Vegeta before the Saiya-jins annexed it. But the purple aliens aren't the Tsurufu-jins we've seen in past projects, so... I don't…

This thing's like an official fan made film that made it into cannon despite making not much sense. Animation's not that bad, though.

A fun little what-if fluff piece.

  • Review by Daxtreme ★★★

Gonna be my last Dragon Ball for a while, Broly just can't seem to be playing nearby right now for some reason.

So I thought it was decent but very uneven. Like for instance I really appreciated the small moments with the curious alien, Bardock's arc from douchebag to savior, but at the same time... it felt a bit forced and random for Bardock to just show up there in the past instead of dying? Like what's up with that? He also turned into a Super Saiyan without any real training whatsoever which kinda undermines Goku's extensive training that got him there (however, that also applies to pretty much everyone later in the series so yeah).

    I like how it…
