B&Q has launched its first ever nationwide Gardener of the Year competition, searching for people who have turned their outdoor spaces into sanctuaries — and there's £10,000 up for grabs.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show might be postponed until September, but B&Q wants to celebrate the spectacular show gardens of the real horticulturists across the UK. Whether you have a window box, patio, balcony or a traditional green space, everyone is encouraged to enter.
Research by B&Q found that 40% of Brits have been growing their own produce in the last 12 months, with 32% creating a unique space that works for them. Set to showcase the British love of gardening, we're certain the entries will be worth celebrating.
How can you enter?
If you're tempted to enter the gardening competition, head over to the B&Q website and submit your application before Friday 18th June. Simply choose which category you would like to enter (see below), giving a short description behind your garden or outside space. You can also upload up to three images to support your application.
The five entries include:
- Best eco-friendly garden
- Best grow your own space
- Best use of colour
- Best use of small space
- Best use of imagination
Comedian Jim Moir is a judge, alongside award-winning garden designers Matt Childs and Humaira Ikram, and B&Q Outdoor Category Director Steve Guy. The overall winner will be awarded £10,000, as well as the newly-launched B&Q Green Card (which gives people access to free plants for ten years). Four runners up will also be selected to receive £1,000 each.
"At B&Q we pride ourselves on providing the nation with the range of products, plants and flowers they need to make the most of their outdoor spaces," Steve Guy, B&Q Outdoor Category Director, says.
"Now, through B&Q Gardener of the year, we want to shine a light on Brits who dedicated time turning their gardens into their own personal oasis. It's great to see how many people have found a love for gardening in recent times. We truly believe gardening should be for the many and not the few, so we hope the launch of this competition will bring out the creative gardeners from up and down the UK."
Jim Moir adds: "I am thrilled to be taking part in the first annual B&Q Gardener of the Year competition. I get so much enjoyment from my garden and it's a real place of solace for me. That's what this competition is all about, finding those gardens which might be a bit rough around the edges, but are perfect to those who love them."
Planning to enter? Good luck!
